Learn to Read

It’s never too late to learn to read!

Almost all people who struggle with reading and spelling simply have not had the teaching they need to unpack the skills for reading and spelling. Our reading coaches will work one-to-one at the learner's own pace for as long as help is needed. Our teaching program has been used to teach thousands of people of all ages to read...

quite simply – it works!

More information about our program and its benefits

  • It’s free.

  • It’s one-to-one.

  • It’s highly effective.

  • It’s very supportive.

  • It goes at the learner’s pace.

  • It continues for as long as the learner needs.

  • It breaks everything down into little steps and gives lots of practice.

  • The volunteers are trained. They are very understanding and respect the learner’s privacy.

  • The learner is not alone – many people struggle with reading and spelling – almost always because of the teaching.

  • The program has been used by thousands of volunteer coaches to teach thousands of adults and teenagers to read.

  • The learner can meet the volunteer before starting sessions to see if they get on.

  • Progress can be very quick if there is no underlying issue or slower if there is, but everyone does make progress.

  • The program is suitable for anyone who can communicate in an everyday way in English and will help English-as-an-Additional-Language learners to improve their English.

  • Volunteers are giving up their time so learners are encouraged to come to each planned session or to let the host agency know if they can’t.

  • If the volunteer is unable to attend a session, they will let the learner know in advance.

  • The volunteer will do some activities with the learner in the first session to see where they are starting from and again on completing the program (for the learner and coach to review progress).

Become a Reading Coach

If you can read and you have patience and understanding then you can become a reading coach.

Positions are available to work with upper primary students, secondary school students or adults in a variety of learning settings.

Simply fill in our application form via the link below and we’ll be in touch to have a chat and see if we suit each other!

If your application is successful, we will invite you to come along to our initial reading coach training course – these happen over the space of two school-length days usually a week apart. Then we will match you with one or more learners and you’ll work at a time that suits you, once or twice a week for 30 to 40 minutes for as many weeks as needed. You may like to work with just one learner or with several.

Read Victoria will provide on-going support and training – and you’ll be changing lives for the better.

Become a Partner School

If you’d like to have reading coaches teaching students at your school it’s a simple process to get going.

Fill in the application form via the link below and we’ll be in touch.

The school will need to provide teaching spaces and a person who can organise timetabling and ensure the program runs smoothly – a Read Victoria volunteer will also be appointed as the volunteer coordinator for your school. The school and Read Victoria will work to source interested volunteers and then Read Victoria will provide training and on-going support as they begin to teach. Students will work one-to-one with a volunteer reading coach using the Turning Pages program, usually once or twice a week depending on timetabling. The coaching will continue for as many weeks as needed. Read Victoria will liaise with the school to select students for the program and will also test all students on entry and exit from the program.

Become a Read Victoria Teaching Venue for Adult Learners

If you’d like to have reading coaches teaching students at your venue it’s a simple process to get going.

This could be a neighbourhood or community house; a library; an adult learning centre; TAFE venue or any other interesting space.
